Our Fair Trade Nursery Reveal

When I was about 5 months pregnant I was contacted by Pottery Barn offering to help us create the perfect nursery for Taj. I was so excited, knowing it would be the perfect brand partnership. The Williams Sonoma brand has been so generous to our organization Do It For The Love, helping us with our fundraising and programing efforts. We also have a ton of Willams Sonoma, West Elm and Pottery Barn already in our house, so it all made sense.

The Potter Barn Kids team was incredible to work with and what made it even better was learning about their Fair Trade initiatives. When a product is Fair Trade Certified, it means that the work environment for the production team is be safe. The factories must meet a set of social, environmental and economic standards to ensure a safe and healthy workplace. Williams Sonoma also puts an emphasis on protection for women and empowering their employees. It was fun to talk to some of the team who had travelled to India to learn more about their fair trade initiatives for themselves. They really could speak to the work they are doing while producing the items in the nursery from start to finish. Some of the products are also green-guard certified which means they have low chemical emissions. I never thought to look for that, but I felt really good to hear that Taj’s crib, glider, end table and changing table are all Green Guard Gold certified.

When they first proposed the idea, their first question was “What would you like your nursery theme to be?” and my response was, “I just want a room that will feel cohesive with the rest of the house and a room both Michael and I enjoy as much as the baby”. Taj’s room has a feeling of lightness and a little bit of whimsy. Michael loves a tropical modern vibe and I like things light and clean feeling. Our crib and dresser are from the Pottery Barn Kids x West Elm collection. It’s a midcentury vibe that is cool but also can fit in many homes. The super comfortable white glider, picture frames and acrylic book shelves are from their brand new Modern Baby collection! I’ve already had many questions about the bookshelves from my instagram stories. I love that they are low, so Taj will be able to pick out the books himself! We were so lucky to have friends give Taj many many books, and a friend gave me good advice to rotate the books out so they all get love and attention. Great idea right! The two wall mirrors (how cute is that cloud with fringe) are also part of the new Modern Baby collection. The Pottery Barn floating frames have custom art including our family mantra of #Be.Serve.Rock: Be your best. Serve the greater good. Rock out wherever you are.

To compliment the Pottery Barns design esthetic, I asked my dear friend and artist Jayashri Triolo to create beautiful line art on two of the nursery walls. She did such an incredible job! My favorite is the little grasshopper in the bottom corner. I secretly hope Taj names him. I think Taj will have a fun time looking at the patterns while sleeping in his crib. The bohemian art piece between the frames is something I picked up in Bali at the local market in Ubud. And, of course, we have Michael’s guitar from when he was about 7 years old in Taj’s room. Oh the nostalgia!

I love everything about this room and what it stands for. I say it in the video, and i really do mean it - the room embodies our family mantra of #be.serve.rock!

Thank you Pottery Barn Kids! I am looking forward to Taj growing up in this room, with this story.
